if you’ve been lucky enough not to have to listen to me talk about it, here are all the things I can’t eat or drink for the next 3-4 months (or maybe ever) because of my migraines.

just in case you said you’d bake me a cake. or were thinking about taking me out to lunch. or wanted to brew me some iced tea. or were hoping to join me in celebrating getting an effing master’s degree.

in descending order of devastating, roughly.

caffeine (iced tea, i miss you more than my i miss my free time. for more information, see “about” page)
all citrus (seriously, you guys. all of it.)
onions (which are in everything, btw, in case you haven’t noticed — “no soup for you!”)
avocado (bye-bye my dearest butter of life)
most cheese, except cream, cottage, & ricotta (seriously, dudes)
fresh bread/bagels/pizza dough (eating only 1+ day old bread is one of the most depressing things that has ever happened to me)
chocolate (not as bad as i expected, but ask me again in a month or two)
nuts and nut butters
vinegar, except clear
bananas
cured, marinated, smoked, tenderized, processed, etc. meats
alcohol
sauerkraut
dried fruit, if preserved with sulfites

red plums (not in season yet, but still sad)

my morning jacket. 5 nov 2005. aladdin theater, portland. i’d never really liked them before. and then they blew me away. literally. fucking incredible.

the everybody fields. 15 feb 2008. aladdin theater, portland. i know they only played two songs, but it was paralyzing – they made the whole room freeze. and, god, i love hearing music at the aladdin.

dj shadow. 23 april 2007 & 17 oct 2000. crystal ballroom, portland & fletcher’s, baltimore. he’s incredbly engaging. i’ve never enjoyed watching a dj so much. except for maybe dj nat.

rilo kiley. 10 oct 2004. black cat, dc. the first time i saw them. jenny lewis made me cry…getting that excruciating look on her face when she sings. like she’s seriously in pain. it was amazing.

engine down. all of them really, but especially richmond, va. we had my polish cousin with us. we showed up late and it was sold out, but we convinced the door person to let us in anyway because we had driven 3 hours and had a girl from poland! it was grand…all that bending at the waist and emo rock and roll and stuff.

pj harvey. some hfstival when she was touring for to bring you my love. she wore that shimmery blue dress and my brother took rad pictures. except that people always think she’s a drag queen when they see the pictures. wtf. will she ever tour the states again? i would pee my pants this time. i’m older and wouldn’t take it for granted.

the cure. 14 sept 1996. patriot center, dc. they opened with plain song and tears uncontrollably streamed down my face. it was pretty embarrassing, but how it sounded filling the stadium was just too much.

macrock. 1999, 2000. harrisonburg, va. mostly because they represent the best of the college experience to me. every time i’m watching some crappy teen tv show and the kids have ridiculously large dorm rooms and i laugh and say it’s bullshit, i remember rebecca’s dorm at jmu. seriously, you guys.

hfstivals and lollapaloozas with kristen: tuscadero, violent femmes, sonic youth, etc. mostly because they represent the best of high school to me.

laspro (live acoustic super prom rock out). and not just because i’m dating one of them who happens to be playing purple haze next to me right now. i always enjoy the classics like range life and life is a highway, but my favorite performance has to have been what’s up, made popular by 4 non blondes.

exciting upcoming show: beach house, opening up for the walkmen. wonder ballroom. 23 jan 2009. wheeee.

now that it’s finally summery in portland (it has been for a month now, but i’m a little late with this post) — i would like to organize a list of things that i’d like to do in the next few months, sans school and sans rain. i hope you will join me for some of these adventures.

read fiction
learn to flush the toilet again (don’t really need anyone to join me for this one)
go swimming at the river
play tennis, without scores or rules
go to a driving range or play mini golf
refinish my dining room table
make a board out of my collection of corks (please give me more corks!)
craft it up, in general
have a “pool” party (check!)
have a housewife party
get furniture for the house ($400 buffet/sideboard/credenza, you will be mine)
sit on patios, lots of them
drink on said patios
play cards in the backyard
lay in the hammock
go to super prom
ride my bike, everyday

why does it seem that dog day care companies and dog groomers have the worst names? there’s a shit ton of them in portland. and they really bother me. it may be that i don’t really like dogs (except for pugs, but they don’t really count). but most likely, it’s because these names are just really, really, annoyingly bad.
